Teruma #1- Keruvim

In parshat truma Perek כה pasuk יח it says ועשית שנים כרביםזהב מקשה תעשה אתם משני קצות הכפרות make 2 Kruvim of gold and you shall hammer them to the 2 ends of the cover. Many commentaries don’t understand the meaning of כרובים. What are these? What do they look like? Rashi explains the look of the kruvim which apparently “resembled the form of a child’s face”.

  1. The sforno explains that the the symbol of the cherubim is for man to understand hashems ways through Torah and to give over this knowledge to others. We also see that man can have a higher understanding and are able to reach a second level of growing and understanding hashem. I like this answer because it not only gives a definition of the word but also explains on how it relates to us and what we can do with this knowledge. - Nealy Saks

  2. Rav Neventzal explains that we just finished going through exact details of every aspect of building the Mishkan. He says that the rules of the mishkan are very specific and you can’t do it any different than the way it is written. The purpose of the Mishkan and of the Torah is for people to study the Torah and learn from it. If there’s nobody studying from it, it is not serving it’s purpose. The Kruvim that look like little children represent children who would be learning Torah. I find this really interesting because he connects Kruvim to the purpose of Torah and serving Hashem. - Naama Katz

  3. Ibn Ezra says that cruvim means two youths, like a baby. It was two children. I think It is interesting that hashem chose babies. Something about them gives me a sense of purity and a clean slate. -Kayla Tarlow

  4. Mendal Kalmosnon explains that the Ahron Kodesh holds the luchot which signifies the "marrige" between g-d and the Jewish people. It is fitting that the Kruvim sit on top of the Ahron because according to the Zohar one represented male and one a female which represents the relationship or marriage between man and woman.

  5. Chizkuni explains that the kruvim was a certain type of bird (shape). Birds are considered clean animals and the Torah forbids us to make anything resembling creatures of the sky or earth because it could possibly be used for avoda zara. But the kruvim here were made to remain hidden inside the most cut off part of the BHMK. Then he brings many exceptions in the Torah were things seem forbidden but then another version of it might be allowed. One example he brings is its forbidden to work on Shabbat but a rabbi works in the shul every Shabbat. Another example he brings is a woman and her brother can’t get married because of עריות but if he dies and they had no children she’s encouraged to marry her husbands brother. I really like this idea and how he not only gives his opinions but then backs it up by bringing different examples. - Aviva Wagner

  6. Rav Katina says that when they would reveal the cherubs, they would be intertwined with each other and that is meant to represent the love between a man and woman. That in itself respresents the love between us and God. I thin that’s a beautiful idea because this is a part of the worship of Hashem and it is used to respresent Hashem’s eternal love for us.

  7. The Kitzur Ball Haturim says that the symbol of the Kruvim is representing the three Avot- The gematria of Shnai Kruvim is Avraham Yitzchak and Yaakov.
I really like this idea because it is important that we always remember the Avot and their actions

  8. The keruvim are very special. Most of the vessels that were in the mishkan were made out of many different materials while the kriuvim were only allowed to be made from single chunks of gold that were hammered together. Rabbi Meir Shapiro comments on this. He says that the krevuim are made out of pure gold with childlike faces. What are kruvim and why must they be made out of gold? They must be made out of gold to show the importance of education. He says that we put a lot of experience and thought into shuls and hospitals but we tend to over look the importance of education. The education that we give our children should be out top priority, The krevuim must be made out of gold to emphasize the importance of education and to show that we should dedicate our best efforts and fortunes to our children so they can be the best they can be.

I really love this idea because I believe that education is so extremely important and it shows how much we are supposed to value it.
