In parshat teruma perek כה pasuk ב it says:
דבר אל בני ישראל ויקחו לי תרומה.
Why does it say ויקחו לי?
It can just say ויקחו תרומה instead of adding the extra word of לי.
Rashi says the “extra” word is there for a reason. He says the word לי is adding that Bnei yisrael should do this act of teruma “in my name” or in other words in honor of Hashem.
I really agree with this opinion because I feel every word in the Torah has a reason and purpose for being there. Here the word that seems extra is actually a beautiful way of honoring Hashem.

ReplyDeleteThe Malbim says that לי means for the sake of My Name. That everything in the world is Hashem's, and therefore it cannot mean, “so it will be Mine.”
I like this idea because it emphasizes and reminds us that Hashem owns everything that is ours.

ReplyDeleteThe Baal Haturim writes that Hashem was teaching Moshe to speak gently to Bnai Yisrael because it will require them to spend money on the Terumah. I like this idea because if you want someone to like you or your idea you should express the idea gently and with comfort.

ReplyDeleteChizkuni says that many commentators say that this was said to Moshe during the 40 days that he was on Har Sinai and that already before the Chet Haegel he was instructed to build the Mishkan which would be in the Aron Kodesh and would have the luchot in it. I like this because even before they got the Luchot, they knew how important it was going to be and how it needed to be treated well and in a special way.
Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan writes that this conversation goes on during the 40 days Moshe is at Har Sinai so it is during a personal time between the Jewish people and Hashem so He added the extra word ‘Li’

ReplyDeleteRabbi Steinsaltz says in his book "Talks on the Parsha", that all the keilim used in the Mishkan were made from donated materials and not the required money that everyone needed to bring. This was because when you donate money you have the intention of where the money should go, but when the money is required you just give because you are told. Therefore the word "Li" is in the passuk to show that the money should be given to Hashem with your intention and you should give extra to what you feel is necessary. I like this idea because it shows that just giving money isn't really what's important, the intention behind why, shows your connection and commitment.

ReplyDeleteThe pasuk says "ויקחו לי", which is translated to mean - that they take "me" — why does Hashem say "Li" when talking about bringing the teruma? Rashi comments on this and explains that when Hahem says “Li” he means to take truma in the glory of his name, that's why hashem says "me". I like this idea because I think it speaks to our role in this world - doing mitzvot (such as bringing Teruma) be'ezelem Elokim - in the glory/ image of Hashem.
According to the Tur HaAroch, The pasuk includes the word ״לי״ because the donations will be used for the construction of the mishkan where they can use it to have a close personal connection with G-d like they have not had before. I think this is a beautiful idea because it shows that G-d really wants a connection with his people.

It says “ויקחו לי”, which means “take for the sake, or in honor of Hashem’s name” and NOT “take so it will be mine”. I like this idea taught by the Malbim since it teaches us that everything in the world was created and belongs to Hashem, and NOT us. It teaches us to be grateful and recongnize Hashem in the things we do.
